Alright guys, so today I want to do something a little different. Aint nobody got time for blog posts, but lately I’ve been having a ton of ideas on things I’d like to blog about, and I’d like to start with the one that got me the most excited. You ready for it? Today’s blog is all about WEDDING CAKES.
Let’s just be honest. I have said a million times over and over that I absolutely love what I get to do! But for realz, the cake is one of the absolute best parts of wedding days. I adore watching the ceremonies as my couples share their sweet vows, the mother son dance always makes me cry as I imagine myself dancing with my own little boy one day at his wedding, and watching all the drunk people make fools of themselves on the dance floor always makes me laugh. But the CAKE THOUGH! That is my reward for a hard day’s work. That’s where I get to sit back for a second, pretend I’m just a guest, soak up all the joyful energy from the room and relish in the fact that this is my job. Sorry but, my occupation just might be cooler than yours. ;)
I want to start by first showing you a couple of my favorite rustic cakes! Barn weddings and all things shabby chic are all the rage these days, and to go along with it these little delicacies are often created to look like trees! Now the first one is from Laura and Chad’s wedding and made by Publix.
The second is from Amanda and Brandon’s wedding made by Petite Madelyn’s Bakery. I am just so impressed at the creativity on these babies! The way the Publix designer was able to use only icing to create the look of tree stumps is pretty spectacular. Then in Amanda and Brandon’s cake, it’s so simple yet so beautifully elegant the way it looks like a white birch tree! Plus, all us romantics in the world love the idea of carving the initials into the trees. That’s my parents’ thing too and it’s just adorable.
Next up we have a couple of grooms’ cakes! I seriously love this idea and I don’t think it’s used enough! A special cake that’s made just for him, to speak to something he likes or a private joke or whatever would make you both smile. It’s such a personalized way to make sure that this day is all about YOU GUYS. The first Jack Daniels cake is from Amanda and Eric’s day and was made by Sweetie’s Delights.
The second cake was from Sarah and Joey’s Star Wars inspired day, and was not only one of the most impressively detailed cakes I’ve ever seen, it also lit up and was featured in an online blog along with the rest of their day. Special thanks to Carlton’s Cakes for this one.
Up next we’ve got a little bit different sort of wedding cake. This cute little thing is one of my favorites. It’s from a little elopement I shot for Emilee and John David at a B&B in St Augustine. I’m sorry to say I don’t have a name for who created the cake, I just know it was provided by the Kenwood Inn where they stayed. This little guy was more than enough for the two of them to celebrate their union, when the only people to witness were myself and the officiant. It was so intimate watching them share a toast of champagne then smash each others mouths with cake before galavanting around the city for pictures. This little elopement cake may be simple but it represents just how much they wanted their wedding day to be about their future and the marriage, not just the pretty little details of a wedding.
This cake here is a Cakes by Ron creation made for Danielle and Brian. They never disappoint when it comes to style OR taste! Their red velvet is seriously so delicious I’d be able to eat an entire cake this size myself. Fondant isn’t my favorite but for design purposes it’s perfect! This nautical themed cake was a show stopper! Those gold accents and little ropes were so wonderfully done.
Next up we have one of my favorite new trends. To have a small cake to cut during the reception, and cupcakes for all the guests! You don’t have the mess of cutting and portioning out the cake, and people can pick their favorite flavors themselves! It usually makes for a cute display and c’mon, who doesn’t love cupcakes?? This pretty little thing was a sweet addition to Roxie + Levi’s wonderful day, brought to you by Publix.
So I know it’s going to seem like I’m really biased toward Cakes by Ron, but… can you blame me!? Look at this! The edible gold painted on the navy layers is seriously breathtaking! This is the sort of excellence you get when Jenn and Mike paired Jennifer Matteo Event Planning and Cakes By Ron.
Keeping with the theme of simple tiers paired with floral flowery goodness, we have this stunning creation from Thompson’s Cakes made for Jessica and Josh. A white wedding cake is still a classic and elegant choice, and when paired with rich jewel toned florals like this, you’ve got a show stopper.
Naked cakes are surprisingly some of my favorites! Maybe it’s because of the rise in popularity of minimalism, or maybe it’s because people figured out that fondant does not taste good… but for whatever reason people like this style, I’m totally on board! I think it might make us feel like we’re eating raw food since we can see the cake underneath the icing? Either way, Publix did it again with this one at Megan and Casey’s reception!
Last up for the fantastic florals is this 4-tiered stunner from Solymar + Luis’s day made by The Artistic Whisk. And art it definitely is! I would have a tough time saving the top for our one year anniversary. I’d put it in the freezer and two days later it would probably be gone. Sugar just doesn’t last very long in our house…
Cakes By Ron just never delivers anything less than a jaw-dropping masterpiece. If you don’t follow them on social media, you should. Also, if you are anywhere near their shop during the week, on Wednesdays they have $2 cupcakes and they are SO WORTH THE CALORIES! I promise. This cake is the product of giving your wedding planner free reign to design as she pleases and to come up with a reception that will blow your mind. Jennifer Matteo planned this beautiful day for Chris and Chelsea and I just could not get over all the beautiful details! Most importantly though, the fact that the dessert tables were directly in front of the shark tanks at Mote Marine. This made for a display worthy of a zillion pictures.
The rest of the desserts were all hand made by Chelsea’s mom! I seriously could not believe the amount of desserts they had in the back to refill as people gobbled them up. They were so delicious I couldn’t stop myself with the peanut butter whoopee pies…
Last but not least we have one of my absolute favorite wedding cakes so far from Sarah and Joey’s wedding. Yes, their day has already been mentioned but these guys went all OUT on their details! This creation is the perfect combination of elegance and whimsy. Sophistication and spunk. They may not like this, but I call this one the mullet cake - business in the front, party in the back. On one side you’ve got this golden floral multi-tiered wedding cake that looks a little more traditional, but absolutely gorgeous. On the other side, the cake appears to open up and SURPRISE you have Star Wars in cake form! Please, go back and take a look at the whole blog from Sarah and Joey’s day. It will not disappoint I promise! Too many fun details you just need to take a look for yourself.
Not only was the cake enough, but Carlton’s Cakes also created edible hand make EWOKS at their topper! I can’t handle how adorable they are. They were placed on their head table alongside a light saber then placed on top of the cake to complete the final design. I just can’t even handle this whole display. Perfection!
Any photographer will tell you that we just love when the details of your wedding day represent YOU. So be creative, dig deep and think about all the things that make you younique as a couple and don’t be afraid to branch out with the details! Not only will you love looking back at all the fun you had designing the day, but your photographer will thank you ;)
